As the Underwriter you analyze client information, financial status, credit, and collateral for eligibility of loan requested in a timely, accurate, and thorough manner. Underwrites and services loans while supporting the department and lenders in a professional manner. Understands and completes job responsibilities in accordance with federal and state regulations.
Verifies data integrity, completeness, and meets standards
Analyzes client information for loan eligibility
Reviews collateral, appraisals, and property evaluations
Ensures loans meet investor guidelines
Assists in resolving mortgage application errors
Approves loans within specified lending authority or refers loan to senior management or loan committee for approval when necessary.
Analyzes and approves requests for dropping of Mortgage Insurance per secondary market guidelines
Handles insurance claims
Responds to mortgage lending audits as appropriate
Loan Operations Support 25%
Updates and maintains the Loan Origination System
Provides support for Mortgage Originators, Personal Bankers, and Loan Operations co-workers
Maintains certain loan operation department written procedures
Researches new products and programs offered by Freddie Mac and other secondary market providers
Additional Duties and Responsibilities 5%
Prepares audit files for Freddie Mac and TENA
Other job related duties necessary to carry out the responsibilities of this position
Participates in internal and external training and development opportunities as needed
Assists other departments as needed
High school diploma or equivalent required, a two year business related degree preferred. Minimum of three years banking, loan experience required. One year of secondary market mortgage loan underwriting preferred. One year of customer service/ administrative experience required. Must possess courteous and professional customer service attitude; excellent verbal and written communication skills for interacting professionally with clients (both pleasant and difficult situations) and relating to other co-workers; ability to maintain the integrity of highly confidential client and Bank information. Must possess technical ability to input and retrieve computerized information; strong organization and follow-up skills; basic mathematical skills (add, subtract, multiply, divide, fractions, percentages, and decimals); legible handwriting. Must possess ability to deal effectively with time pressures and stress that can change hourly depending on level of client activity; effective problem solving and research skills.
